Produced and arranged by Marty, "Tokyo Jukebox" reflects the chaotic lifestyle of Tokyo, its unique music and Marty's futuristic interpretation of it. According to a posting on Marty's web site, "Sonically, it goes from his 'Loudspeaker' lineup all the way to a 70-piece symphony orchestra. Marty covers the most unlikely artists to get his guitar heavy treatment, including PERFUME, MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, AI, NAKASHIMA MIKA, IKIMONO GAKARI and seven other staples in the world of current Japanese music."

"The songs were chosen in part by the readers of Nikkei Entertainment!, Japan's all-time number one entertainment magazine, which features a popular page on Marty each month for over three years and still going strong.

"All the songs go through Marty's extravagant, epic, and quite often brutally twisted treatment. 'Tokyo Jukebox' is the new definitive display of Marty's current state of mind as well as the deepest evolution of his guitar playing and overall musicality ever."

With a style equally at home in almost every genre, from full on shred to straight pop tunes to mind blowing fusion songs, its little wonder that Marco was the guitarist of choice when Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie went looking for a guitarist to perform and then tour for his "Elements Of Persuasion" album. His debut, There's Hope, is 11 tracks with a mix of influences Marco has absorbed since he took up the guitar at age 9. On the album Marco comments, "There are plenty of shred records out there and sounds like many guitarists are losing the melodic component. My goal was to make it very melodic with the right amount of fire!" There's Hope delivers Marco's aims with stunning precision, detail and emotional content sure to make it a "must own" release for fans of quality music and virtuoso guitar work. Before Portuguese guitarist Goncalo Pereira's CD "Upgrade", which featured music ranging from blues to progressive power metal, funk, pop, classical, fusion and rock, came Tricot No Pais Das Maravilhas, his 1998 home studio effort that offers more of the same, and then some. An incredible 74 minutes of music that could, along with "Upgrade", make Mike Varney wish he spoke Portuguese. Blazing, well-produced fretwork dominates the instrumental record, along with contributions by drummer Filipe Goncalves and bassist Dick. The CD booklet even contains a few tabs of various short licks Pereira uses in his songs. Tricot No Pais Das Maravilhas is a great addition to your Goncalo Pereira library, and proves that shred is not dead in Portugal.

Taking his influences from many sources including Steve Vai, Al DiMeola, Yngwie Malmsteen, JS Bach, John Williams and Frank Zappa, at the age of 19, he was one of the finalists of the nation-wide "Sam Ash Music Store" guitar contest. He wrote and recorded his debut solo album in 1994 entitled The Dark Chapter which features an ambitious reworking of Paganini's Concerto in B Minor - arranged for the guitar by Romeo himself. Not only did he play the majority of all the instruments on the album, he also engineered, mixed and produced the album showcasing his versatile abilities in the studio. Romeo is an incredibly accomplished player drawing on a neo-classical style reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen while retaining his own identifiable signature that sets him apart from other players in this genre. He has received major coverage in many of the guitar magazines around the world and is best known for his role as lead guitarist in Symphony X.

Stephan Forte - Vision (1996)

Tracklist:
1.Sweet Dreams
2.Ereshkigal
3.Temple Of Lust
4.Moonsand

French guitarist Stephan Forte (Adagio guitarist) submitted a four song demo CD-R, entitled Visions, which so impressed producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Dio, Malmsteen) that Chris had to meet him. Really consisting of three metal/shred tracks plus an intro 'lullaby' track, Forte crams a zillion notes into fifteen minutes - this shredder can shred up a storm. Excellent music, but Malmsteen's influence is evident throughout, from playing style to composition to production - this young guitarist has the neo-classical style down cold. This may make it difficult for Forte to establish his own niche in the instrumental guitar spectrum, but he has definitely built up the chops to be able to delve into any aspect of guitar playing he so chooses. Future experimentation and a lot more experience writing will make Forte a formidable player in the coming years.

Starting on guitar at age 5, Stephan began learning songs by ear. He picked up the electric guitar at age 11, then became inspired by Yngwie Malmsteen. This caused Stephan to practice ever more seriously and he later enrolled at CMCN in Nancy, France to complete the guitar player program. He has since played at many guitar festivals, and got a chance to open for his mentor Malmsteen in 1998.

"Suspension" features Italian shred guitarist Francesco Fareri blazing on six instrumental songs in the neo-classical and progressive metal style. Much of the music showcases Fareri's mind boggling, head numbing speed, especially on swept licks - one of his specialties. Fareri states, "When I hear this music, it seems as a bird that flies near the sea without touching it - his movements are very fast around the sea which changes his motion - and it creates a sense of intrigue between the guitar solos and the rhythm parts. The rhythm section is very fast - the drums are powerful on the solos that are very fluent." Well put - a shred extravaganza!

Govan’s debut solo album, Erotic Cakes, was released through Cornford Records in August 2006. In the album's sleeve notes, Govan states the album is named after an episode of The Simpsons; he also explains that when playing live, the band is billed as ‘Erotic Cakes’ rather than simply Guthrie Govan.

In addition to bass by Govan’s brother Seth and drumming by Pete Riley, the album features guitar solos by Richie Kotzen (whose Los Angeles studio was used to record the guitar tracks on the album) and Bumblefoot on ‘Ner Ner’ and ‘Rhode Island Shred’ respectively. Seth Govan and Pete Riley also complete the Erotic Cakes live band.

Several of the tracks on the album existed in various incarnations previously. Notably, versions of ‘Waves’ and ‘Rhode Island Shred’ appeared on the compilation Guitar on the Edge, Vol 1. no.4 (Legato Records, 1993); his inclusion on the compilation was organised by Mike Varney's brother, Mark. Furthermore a version of his ‘Guitarist of the Year’ winning piece, ‘Wonderful Slippery Thing’ appears on the album. While this is his first album, Govan had been collaborating with drummer Pete Riley on the music since the mid-1990s.

The Erotic Cakes band line up, with the addition of saxophonist Zak Barrett, also forms jazz-fusion band The Fellowship. The band plays at the Bassment club in Chelmsford, Essex, every Thursday night and has done so for several years.

Derek Sherinian - Molecular Heinosity (2009)

Line up:
Derek Sherinian - keyboards
Zakk Wylde - vocals, guitar
Tony Franklin - fretless bass
Virgil Donati - drums
Brian Tichy - drums, guitar

Tracklist:
1. Antarctica (5:26)
2. Ascension (2:14)
3. Primal Eleven (7:56)
4. Wings Of Insanity (3:50)
5. Frozen By Fire (5:21)
6. The Lone Spaniard (3:08)
7. Molecular Intro (1:03)
8. Molecular Heinosity (3:28)
9. So Far Gone (7:24)

Molecular Heinosity is Derek Sherinian's sixth solo album. Much like its predecessor, Blood of the Snake, it sees the skilled keyboardist opting for a predominantly guitar-based album, enlisting the services of guitar heroes that include the ever-present Zakk Wylde, the terribly underrated Brett Garsed, and Rusty Cooley among others.

The first three tracks sort of recall the trilogy on Sherinian's first album Planet X. Written and arranged by the great Virgil Donati, they inevitably lend themselves to fusion territory, often evoking the material presented on Planet X's last album Quantum. "Antarctica" is an expansive number, with a strong rhythmic backbone and tasty synth elements. "Ascension" is comparatively more psychedelic, and a welcome change to Sherinian's often guitar-driven new sound. With "Primal Eleven", the drumming becomes more prominent as does Tony Franklin's beautiful fretless bass playing. Sherinian elicits myriad synth tones out of his instrument, while the guitar work is subtly integrated into the composition.

New recruit Rusty Cooley, the amazing shred god, appears on "Frozen By Fire", which he helped co-write. Sadly though, the tune turns out to be yet another neoclassic shred fest, bringing little novelty to the table. It's a shame the duo couldn't come up with more interesting ideas; actually the material on Cooley's self-titled solo album is much better if we are talking about shred for shred's sake.

Though this album has been marketed as a more 'metal' release than Sherinian's previous outings, the only tunes that really present unbridled aggression would be "Wings of Insanity", for its rhythmically stupefying intro, and the amazing title track, obviously influenced by the great Meshuggah. After repeat listens, it is only this track that qualifies as something new from Derek Sherinian. It boasts challenging guitar work, dense synth experimentation, and brutal onslaughts of drum and bass dominance. It would have been great if he had further experimented with this idea.

Sadly without Simon Phillips co-writing and arranging with Sherinian, Molecular Heinosity proves to be merely a mishmash of songs, partly Quantum-era fusiony tunes with the compulsory neoclassic shred (performed much better on the previous tunes by Yngwie Malmsteen) and the occasional ethnic influences.

Zakk Wylde sings on the only vocal track "So Far Gone", laced with elements from Sherinian's Armenian roots. It's an average song in which Wylde attempts to revive the classic Sabbath sound, but honestly the mix of cello, metal, fusion, and 'Ozzy' on vocals does not quite work, rendering it somewhat overwrought.

Maybe it's about time Derek Sherinian sat down and actually tried to compose songs on his own, without relying on big names who will help sell albums easily. There is a reason why Sherinian has never quite matched the brilliance of his first two albums, particularly Inertia. Bringing in countless shred heroes and relying on their technical proficiency obviously doesn't cut it anymore. It seemed to work with Black Utopia and Mythology, and even Blood of the Snake to an extent, but in time these records have certainly paled in comparison to the more compositional works on the first two discs.

When I buy a Derek Sherinian album, I either want to see him compose songs that highlight his keyboard playing (like Jordan Rudess for example) or do something really interesting rather than repeating past glories. Still, for an instrumental album, Molecular Heinosity is well worth checking out. It's just that I feel he can do better.

It includes many musicians and features guitarists such as Marty Friedman, Greg Howe, Joe Satriani, Michael Lee Firkins, Steve Vai, and Steve Hunter.

This album contains a mixture of remastered songs from Becker's previous projects, as well as three new songs. Even though he can no longer move, he was still able to compose for the album. He explained his method in an HTML file included on the album disc.

"I used a music software program called LogicPro with a Mac computer and a synthesizer keyboard hooked up to it. My father had invented a very fast and effective communication system for me when I was losing my voice. It is a sign language that requires only eye movements and is faster than any computer. I would try to explain to my caregiver (usually my dad, mom, or my close friends) what to play on the keyboard. When they got fairly close, I would have them take me into LogicPro where I could edit every part of every note. After composing in this way I got together with my friend and co-producer, Dan Alvarez. We worked on arrangements and sounds to make it better. Then we got musician friends to add their talents to the mix."

In addition to 13 tracks, the disc also includes bonus features that are playable on a computer. These features include demo versions of Becker's piece End of the Beginning recorded while he could still barely play, as well as a demo of Go Off! from Cacophony and a recording of Becker "noodling" on guitar.

Please support Jason by buying his album.

Alex Masi's first solo album, Attack Of The Neon Shark is an exciting, groundbreaking affair that was nominated for a Grammy in 1989. The features the slashing, sometimes harmonically dissonant (in the Friedman/Becker/Cacophony sense, such as "DFWM" and the title track), instrumental metal/hard rock patented by Masi (although vocalist Jeff Scott Soto does appear on "Under Fire"). Other featured musicians include drummer Frankie Banali, Allan Holdsworth (on synthaxe) and Kuni (who plays the first guitar solo on "Under Fire"). The album even has it's fusiony moments such as on "Cold Sun" and "L.A. Lattaia". Attack Of The Neon Shark is musically much more daring than your typical instrumental guitar release - it also includes a Masi-fied cover of "Toccata" (Emerson, Lake and Palmer). If you’ve been listening to underground metal for the past 10 years or so, you’ve probably had the pleasure to hear NEVERMORE’s unsung lead guitarist Jeff Loomis. To call Loomis‘ progressive, heavy, and technically superior guitar playing “modern” would be a great place to start. Zero Order Phase represents his first entry into the instrumental guitar album genre. It clearly shows dimensions of Loomis‘ playing and songwriting which have never been displayed before. While opening song, “Shouting Fire at a Funeral,” may sound like it could’ve been a NEVERMORE song, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In place of where one would expect Warrel Dane’s vocals to come in, Loomis plays beautiful melodic leads that possess the perfect tone. “Opulent Maelstrom” is a great mix of dissonance, jazz fusion, and soaring leads. Actually, Zero Order Phase is all about tasteful and soaring leads. The songs themselves are compelling and solid enough to stand alone as legit songs as opposed to being a mere platform for Loomis to just play solos. Zero Order Phase also features a good amount of variety in the songs such as the mellow yet strong “Azure Haze” and the weird juxtapositions of ominous parts and light Indian-like jams of “Cashmere Shiv.” “Sacristy” is the only track that actually sounds more in line with what a typical guitar instrumental album would sound like with its progressive feel and solo style. “Devil Theory” and “Miles of Machines” showcase Loomis‘ mindblowing speed, technique, and feel as he tears up the fretboard in awesome fashion. The album’s final track, “Departure,” is a haunting and beautiful acoustic track that picks up where the acoustic intro to OZZY’s “Diary of a Madman” left off. Even if guitar instrumental albums are not your thing, Zero Order Phase stands out for being more song-oriented, unremorsefully metal, and just plain more compelling.

“In The Wake Of Chaos”, the phenomenal new studio disc from British axemaster Andy James, features 11 tracks (62 minutes) of amazingly brilliant, powerful, mind-blowing, world-class instrumental heavy guitar “shred” madness. An impressive full-frontal, heavy-duty, aggressive, hi-tech instrumental guitar disc that will set the Guitar World on it’s ear. Make no mistake, Andy James is the REAL deal and “In The Wake Of Chaos” is a true virtuoso modern day metal shred guitar classic.

Hailing from Norfolk, England Andy James is the U.K.’s latest and best exponent for serious shred guitar music. James is without a doubt one of the most incredible instrumental guitarists we have heard in a long time and takes the throne as the number one British guitar god. With flawless, highly developed, speed-induced, muscular chops and super-human two-handed sweep picking madness his guitar playing is beyond brilliant and sets new standards. “In The Wake Of Chaos” is an explosive shred-filled, dazzling display of high-powered aggressive instrumental guitar riffage that will leave you speechless. Not since Satriani, Malmsteen or Shawn Lane have we heard such an amazing, gifted guitar master. Those are big words, however one listen to “In The Wake Of Chaos” and you’ll get the picture. Andy James is on the “same page” as those players and he is also the best Shrapnel guitarist you have never heard of...period. What sets Andy James apart from 99% of the other guitar shredders out there is his strong sense of melody along with an ability to write strong, dynamic, memorable songs that showcase his phenomenal guitar playing. On “In The Wake Of Chaos”, Andy James has achieved true greatness on all levels and plays for the song opposed to a “shred for the sake of shred” guitar masturbation excercise which is so painfully obvious with most instrumental guitar discs. He has set a new standard for shred guitar music on “In The Wake Of Chaos”. Andy James is a guitar giant and guitar fans worldwide will be awed by his six-string magic. Based on his vast musical accomplishments strongly evident on “In The Wake Of Chaos”, if Satriani is looking for a legit, 3rd key player for his next G3 tour and if rock vocal gods aka Ozzy and Dio are looking for a new six string heavy metal guitar wizard, look no further than Andy James.

“In The Wake Of Chaos” is an amazing instrumental heavy guitar shred-fest that is HIGHLY recommended to fans of killer axemasters like JOE SATRIANI, STEVE VAI, EDDIE VAN HALEN, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, SHAWN LANE, GREG HOWE, JASON BECKER, PAUL GILBERT, ZAKK WYLDE, MICHAEL SCHENKER, VINNIE MOORE, DOUG ALDRICH, GEORGE LYNCH, JOHN PETRUCCI, MICHAEL ANGELO, DIMEBAG DARRELL, MATTIAS EKLUNDH, BUCKETHEAD, AKIRA TAKASAKI, CHRIS POLAND, AL ESTRADA, RANDY McSTINE, JEFF KOLLMAN, JOE STUMP & GUS G. and other incredible guitarists who have taken the guitar to new levels. As an added bonus, “In The Wake Of Chaos” features an incredible 8 minute epic track called “Against The Gods” which is dedicated to brother Dimebag Darrell (RIP). An amazing, jaw-dropping, deep heavy guitar statement and “musical tribute” that is worth the price of admission alone. This is the stuff heavy guitar dreams are made of.

When was the last time you heard a guitarist who really had something to say on the guitar? Andy James takes the guitar to new levels of insanity and has raised the “guitar game” on “In The Wake Of Chaos”, recorded exclusively for Grooveyard Records, a label dedicated to outstanding TOTAL GUITAR music. “In The Wake Of Chaos” is a highly-impressive, well-educated (smart), interesting heavy guitar disc from an important guitarist; a balance between composition, virtuoso sophistication and tone mastery that together achieve perfection. An absolute must-have for any fan of top-shelf guitar-driven shred and quality guitar music. Even non-guitar playing music heads will heavily dig this mind-blowing, awesome heavy guitar monster. Trust us, shred ain’t dead...Andy James is here to save the day.

03:33 Cyberworld
02:55 European Heaven

Bernd Steidl's highly anticipated second album, "Paganiniana" released July 10, 2001 is an acoustic showcase of adventurous compositions and phenomenal technique. Falling between Nuevo Flamenco, World and Classical idioms, Bernd Steidl has the technique of a master and thus the attention of the guitar community. Highlights of the album are ""Paganiniana" 1" and ""Paganiniana" 2", in which Steidl offers his own interpretations of the great 19th century Italian artist. "It's difficult to play Paganini on acoustic guitar because you have to play his music with real precision," says Steidl. "If you play sloppy, everything is just gone." Steidl is anything but sloppy, as he delivers his machine-gun solos with a passion and technical mastery that would no doubt have pleased Paganini himself.

Stanley Jordan - Magic Touch (1985)

Year: 1985
Genre: Jazz

Tracklist:
01 Eleanor Rigby 07:01
02 Freddie Freeloader 06:09
03 Round Midnight 05:08
04 All The Children 05:02
05 The Lady In My Life 06:26
06 Angel 04:14
07 Fundance 02:35
08 New Love 05:37
09 Return Expedition 08:04
10 A Child Is Born 03:33

This debut record from Stanley Jordan features the guitarist's extraordinarily idiosyncratic tapping technique on a variety of material. Jordan's revolutionary approach to the instrument, consisting of striking the fretboard with both hands to sound notes, allows him access to musical possibilities that are simply out of the reach of other guitar players. It is in his hands that the guitar attains a level of self-accompaniment formerly held only by the piano. Fortunately, Jordan puts his prodigious chops to good use making good music. One area in particular in which he is terrifically talented is in the reinterpretation of modern pop material. His version of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," accompanied only by the subtle percussion of Sammy Figueroa, dismisses the British melancholy of the original for a light-as-air interpretation that brings out the playfulness in the melody. Also impressive is Jordan's cover of Michael Jackson's "The Lady in My Life," which the guitarist gives a smooth, sultry reading. On the flip side, Jordan also proves that he is not out of touch with the history of jazz, with delightful versions of "Freddie Freeloader," "'Round Midnight," and "A Child Is Born." The guitarist's sidemen, who include drummers Omar Hakim and Peter Erskine, are all seasoned professionals, and they play well, but no matter how good the group performances on Magic Touch are, they are no match for the shocking polyphony of Jordan's solo material. It is there that the record really comes alive. Jordan's later albums were not to capitalize on the promise shown on his debut, but in Magic Touch the guitarist had something truly special. An instant classic, and one of the definitive moments of modern jazz guitar.

Giant Robot is the second studio album by avant-garde guitarist Buckethead (not to be confused with the 1996 Giant Robot, also featuring Buckethead) and loosely following the same "abusement park" concept as his previous album (Bucketheadland). It has some re-hashed songs from Buckethead's band Deli Creeps, as well his earlier demo tape Bucketheadland Blueprints. One could describe this album as a more "rock" or "musical" album. Re-hashed songs have lost their "basement" or "video game" sounding beats and guitar licks compared to his debut album. Again, the album was originally a Japanese only release.

Unlike later Buckethead solo albums the Bill Laswell produced Giant Robot contains many vocal bits from illustrious guests such as Iggy Pop, Bill Moseley, Throatrake and Julian Schnabel's kids Stella and Vito.

The album also features many high profile instrumentalists such as Sly Dunbar, Bootsy Collins and Karl Berger.

The reason "Binge and Grab" is noted as being an "instrumental version" is because it was originally a Deli Creeps song with lyrics by Maximum Bob. There is no known studio recording of the Deli Creeps version but there are many bootleg copies from live shows which can be found among collectors.

The track "Pure Imagination" features an introduction message that sounds like Mudbone, Richard Pryor's most famous character.

Overall, the music has been described as "an equally unique sound from P-Funkadelic grooves, shoddy sci-fi dialogue samples and the wickedest six-string shredding this side of Steve Vai."

The cover art features a shadow of a giant robot and sets the tone for the music on the album. The original release contains a comic inside the booklet.

The album was re-issued in 2000 through CyberOctave, making it more widely available.
